On Friday night, Nvidia announced the GeFroce GTX 1080, a Pascal architecture based GPU that is fast. The CEO of Nvidia Jen-Hsun Huang revealed that it is faster & three times power efficient than its current king the Titan X which is priced at $1,000 USD. It is basically the successor to the Nvidia GTX 980.
According to the CEO who unveiled the GPU, the 1080 is faster than two GTX 980 running on SLI technology. It is built with a new 16nm FinFET manufacturing process which makes it a power efficient tool although being that fast. This card is basically made for gamers. Prior to its unveiling, they showed of several new titles like The Division & Rise of the Tomb Raider running at max settings in a high resolution over 60 frames per second & later revealed that they were all ran on the new card.
The GTX 1080 also offers “Simultaneous Multi-Projection”, which helps games to look less distorted for triple monitor setups or ultra-wide 21×9 screens. It also helps the card to be more efficient at rendering VR contents. It spits out 9 teraflops & also has 8GB of Micron’s new GDDR5X Ram. They have also showed a newer version of Nvidia’s SLI technology dubbed SLI HB (High Bandwidth). SLI HB will double the amount of bandwidth available between paired cards. At the same time this change will require a new SLI HB bridge, presumably to be compliant with the tighter signal integrity requirements a higher bandwidth link would require. NVIDIA is producing the new rigid bridge with their usual flair for industrial design.
The GTX 1080 is the “largest GPU endeavor, largest chip endeavor, largest processor endeavor, in the history of humanity, it is twice as fast as the Titan X when using the multi-projection feature to render VR.” said the CEO Jen-Hsun Huang. He added that the R&D budget for the new card was “several billion dollars” over the span of more than two years.
It will be available for $599 on May 27, and you can also get a special Nvidia designed “Founder’s Edition” for $699 which has a stylish new cooler. Nvidia also revealed that they will also release the GTX 1070 on June 10 for $379. Concerning limited budget, it sounds like the GTX 1070 with 8GB of GDDR5 Ram will be a pretty good deal just like the 970 was.
Seems like AMD will have to produce something big with their upcoming GPU’s based on Polaris technology to keep up with Nvidia.
